Florida Snook Need a Break from Cold Weather

Snook, Cannons Marina, floridaBy Sunday morning hundreds of snook had died in the canals of Anna Maria Island, Snead Island and the Bradenton Yacht Club in Palmetto.

Sand bream (mojarras) died today in the upper reaches of the Manatee River near Fort Hamer. With one more night of even colder weather and a hard wind gusting to 25 from the north, a lot more snook are sure to die.

Where Has the Sport of Fishing Gone?

Sport Fishing, Cannons Marina, Longboat KeyIt alarms me that fishing appears to be abandoning the sporting element that once made this past time great. Maybe it is because we have too many fish or too many anglers because hunting has gone the opposite direction.

The men and women who stalk big game do so now with primitive bows and arrows, cameras and even paintball guns. They’ll be reduced to spears and slings before it’s done and the entire reason for it is to put sport back into the hunt by handicapping the modern practitioner. Fishing, on the other hand, seems to be moving the opposite direction.

We’ve all seen it or been a part of it. They advertise robotic fishing lures on television as a can’t fail technique. You and I realize this is a scam and doesn’t work. But that doesn’t keep Madison Avenue from probing the current “fish at any cost” way of thinking.

Be proactive, you can help stop boat thefts.

Boats, Cannons Marina, Longboat KeyBoat Thefts

With boat thefts on the rise all along the west coast of Florida and as a Florida boat dealer, Cannons Marina took a proactive approach recently to try and halt, or at least slow the problem.

Representatives from the Longboat Key Police Department and U.S. Coast Guard Station Cortez came to the Marina October 29 to discuss the situation and steps owners can take to protect their boats to the greatest extent possible.

All agreed that the best deterrent is to install throttle and steering locks, which may frustrate thieves enough to make them leave the scene.

Tarpon Fishing Boca Grande. Basic Etiquette.

Tarpon Fishing Boca GrandeRecently I was tarpon fishing in Boca Grande. The trip is a yearly family tradition. My husband, son and I prefer to fish the beaches and Charlotte Harbor rather than the often crowded and famed Boca Grande Pass.

Let’s get one thing clear here, I love to fish and I am a non-professional fisher-lady, actually somewhat of a novice at the sport.  Although a novice I was taught some basic fishing rules and etiquette, as I fish with a well known local guide by the name of Captain Scott Moore.

Fishing Florida, winter wading yields hot action in Tampa and Sarasota Bay.

by Guest Writer: Rusty Chinnis

Fishing-Florida, Cannons Marina, TampaIf you’re one of those fishermen who think of wade fishing as a summertime activity, you may be missing the boat. Winter wading can be extremely productive and will often give you an advantage over boat-bound anglers.

Florida Writer, Grady White Boats and Cannons Marina?

“The boat was a Grady White twenty-eight foot walk around. It was made for fishing, with a large cockpit and wide gunwales, made so that the fisherman could easily walk around the cabin trunk to the bow if he had a fish on the line. It sported twin 250-horsepower Yamaha outboards that would push it through the water at almost fifty miles per hour. She was my love, and her name was Recess.” – Matt Royal in Blood Island.

Ethanol. Yamaha Motors. Yamaha Performance.

Yesterday a customer called very unhappy about an annual service he had performed almost two months ago. The issue: ETHANOL fuel.

In June, we informed our customers that Ethanol blends even blended with ratios as little as 10 percent are causing problems. This is such an important issue that I want to reiterate this to our customers.

Sarasota Bay Watch and The Great Scallop Search

Team Cannons Marina participated in the Great Scallop Search and we are happy to report that our divers found 32 scallops and a nice little shark feeding on the sandbar! The scallop research was administered by local and regional scientists, but it was actually the local community volunteers who went overboard into the seagrass to count the budding scallop population in Sarasota Bay. The results were as follows:

  • Total Scallops counted: 947
  • Transects covered: 36
  • Boat participating: 31
  • Snorkelers participating: 62
