A Storied History

In the late 1940s, Cannons was a remote fishing camp on Florida’s barrier island of Longboat Key, with only dirt roads and no bridge from the north end of the island to the mainland. Wild hogs and rattlesnakes outnumbered people.

It was the lure of the simpler life this place offered that led Paul Miller, an engineer from Michigan’s Great Lakes, his wife, Dorothy, and their two young children, Sally and David, to pack up their station wagon and make the trip South to this nearly uninhabited island. Struck by the profound beauty and pristine waters of the Bay and Gulf, Paul traded his engineering career for the romance of Florida’s boating life. In 1955, on a handshake, he purchased Cannons from Ernie Cannon.

David was only five when he started working at the Marina, counting bait for local fishermen and tourists. Like his dad, he loved the life and spent his formative years learning every aspect of the business. After returning home from college in the 1970’s David purchased Cannons from his father.

From its modest roots as a boat rental and bait shop, David and an equally devoted team of professionals have grown Cannons into one of the most respected boat dealers in the country, celebrating more than 63 years of uninterrupted family ownership. And while the wild hogs and rattlesnakes no longer outnumbered the island’s residents, the waters that surround it have lost none of their power to delight.
